Tooth decay in preschool children, or early childhood caries (ECC), is one of the most prevalent diseases in
children. It was reported that approximately half a population of 5-year-old Hong Kong children are suffering
from ECC with more than 90% of ECC left untreated. ECC causes pain and infection. Advanced caries will
progress into the tooth pulp to eventually form a dental abscess. More importantly, compromised dentition
significantly affects the children’s nutrition and consequently their growth, development, and general health.
This lecture will introduce a community project by the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong
with the support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to launch a kindergarten outreach
dental service to preschool children in Hong Kong.
