Interceptive Orthodontics in View of Evidence
Interceptive orthodontic treatment is a proactive strategy primarily targeting developmental malocclusion, which aims to promptly eliminate adverse factors that may lead to the onset or exacerbation of malocclusions, to simplify subsequent treatments and to reduce long-term complications. An accurate understanding of the principles of interceptive orthodontics is crucial for orthodontists. Clinical decision-making must balance biological boundaries, individual variability, and evidence-based considerations. Current debates focus on the optimal timing of intervention, long-term efficacy, and the risks of overtreatment. This sharing synthesizes current evidence to discuss interceptive strategies, analyze variability in treatment responses, and address challenges. By integrating research with clinical practice, it emphasizes the need for further patient-centered approaches to optimize the risk-benefit ratio of interceptive orthodontic treatment.
